Member Spotlight: Daniel Vitter

We’re back at it with the AIGA Tallahassee Member Spotlight! This month we’re thrilled to feature the amazing Daniel Vitter:

I’ve been drawing/doodling as far back as I can remember, so I started my journey in art and design with a fine arts degree. I then graduated from Savannah College of Art & Design with a B.F.A. in Graphic Design in 2003, and I moved to Tallahassee in 2006 to begin working at Rowland Publishing as a designer. I worked my way up through the company taking on various roles within the Production department, and I’m now the Director of Production and Technology, where I oversee a team of 6 designers and help manage roughly 40–45 magazines from concept to finished product each year. I absolutely love print design. Magazines were actually my first exposure to the idea of graphic design as a career. In the late 80s and early 90s, I always had copies of Thrasher, Transworld, RayGun and many other magazines laying around. Their bold typographic exploration and the way they fused art and copy together really captured my imagination at a young age. Little did I know at that time I’d be making magazines for a living one day.

I’ve been skateboarding since I was 10 years old, and I suppose it was the first thing I was ever truly passionate about. I credit skateboarding for introducing art, photography, music and design into my life. Even though I tore my ACL last October at the local skatepark, I still want to get out on my board. My physical therapy is nearly complete, so I guess it’s time to ease back into it. Other hobbies include woodworking, collecting vinyl records and reading lots of city and regional lifestyle magazines from all over the U.S. And although I do far less freelance work now than I used to, I still enjoy building WordPress sites occasionally and have a few clients that send me print design work on a regular basis, which helps keeps my design skills sharp. But mostly I’m filling my extra time watching skate videos.

Joining AIGA has been one of the best decisions I made this past year. Hanging out with other AIGA members at Coffee & Creatives and Designer Drinks has truly helped me feel a part of a larger community of creative individuals here in Tallahassee. I’m looking forward to many years of membership, and will be working to get more of my team signed up in the future. Cheers!!! Keep up the good work everybody.
